As with the height of a worksheet row, the width of an individual column, or all columns, can be adjusted to better fit their content. Setting columns widths appropriately can greatly enhance the presentation of your data.

A column's width can range from of 0 (zero) to 255 characters using the standard font. A column that has its width set to 0 (zero) is hidden. The default column width is 8.43 characters. There are several methods to change the column width.

#1)
Dragging column edge with the mouse to set width manually:
This method is most useful when you need to quickly set the width of a single column.
Note:
See also Row Heights
#2)
Double clicking column edge to set width automatically:
This method is most useful when you want to automatically fit the widest content of any cell in the column.
Note:
The resulting colum width may or may not be consistent with other columns.
#3)
Using the context menu (right click) to set the width manually:
This method is most useful when you know the exact width you desire.
Note:
You can also get to this point with a keyboard shortcut by pressing sequentially (don't hold keys down) the Alt, O, C, W keys. But this hardly seems like a "shortcut"!
Note:
Setting multiple columns to the same width is illustratedbelow.
#4)
Using the ribbon menu to set the width manually:
This method is fine, but it's not the most convenient.

This is the same point reached in method above.

#5)
Setting the width of multiple columns at the same time:
Note:
Selecting non-adjacent columns, rows and cells all work in the same manner. Hold the Ctrl key down and click on each of the items you want to select.
#6)
Setting the default column width:
This will set the width for all columns in a worksheet but will not change the width of columns that have been previously set to a particular width prior to using this command.
Note:
The resulting colum width may or may not be consistent with other columns.
Now all columns in this worksheet have a default width of 15 which, of course, can be further changed.

Summary

There are several ways to change the column width. It's matter of preference depending on how often you need to do this. The easiest method is generally method above whereby the column width is set to automatically fit the widest content in any of the cells in the selected column. If you need to set specific and consistent widths for your columns, any of the other methods are easy.
