The LEFT function returns a number of characters from the left side of text in a cell. Using LEFT is fairly straightforward and is particularly useful when you paste or import data that has text strings for which you only want to see/use a portion of it.

LEFT takes 1 required argument and 1 optional argument:

Syntax: LEFT(text, [num_chars])

The arguments for the LEFT function are:
Argument Required? Description
text Required The text string that contains the characters you want to extract.
num_chars Optional Specifies the number of characters you want LEFT to extract.
num_chars must be greater than or equal to zero.
If num_chars is greater than the length of text, LEFT returns all of text.
If num_chars is omitted, it is assumed to be 1.
